COSC Rules

Safety 1st and with that in mind here are just a few of the many rules to guide you while visiting The Canyon Oaks Sportsman's Club

COSC is considered a "Cold Range". No firearms shall be loaded except at the firing line. Shooting is only permitted at the direction of the designated targets or towards the targets instructed by the Range Officer if within an organized shooting activity.

During a "cease fire", all firearms will be immediately cleared, magazines removed, and benched, holstered, or grounded. All persons will stand clear of any firearms, and firearms will not be handled while anyone is forward of the firing line.

Firearms will always be handled in a safe manner with muzzles kept pointed in a safe direction or downrange at all times.

Tracer, armor piercing, incendiary, and explosive ammunition are strictly prohibited. The Range Safety Officer on duty is responsible for safety and has ultimate authority on the range. Failure to comply with the instructions may result in expulsion from the facility.

In order to maintain a safe and clean environment for all users of the Lopez Canyon Range facility, all members and guests shall be responsible for area clean-up, safe shooting practices, and the preservation of the area and its facilities.

Persons observed to be careless, destructive, negligent, or who leave their trash behind shall be determined to be in violation of the Range Rules.

All allegations of rule violations by a club member or guest are investigated by the board of directors with their findings presented to the general membership for consideration. Violation of Range Rules is punishable by up to $50 fine, suspension of club membership, or expulsion from the Range.

Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Know your target and what is beyond.

All firearms must be carried with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Firearms may be loaded only when the shooter is at the firing line and ready to shoot.

All un-cased firearms must be carried unloaded with action open when arriving or departing from range.

Never point a gun at any person or thing that you are not willing to shoot.

Treat all guns as if they were loaded.

Know and understand how to use your gun safely, and if in doubt, ask the Range Safety Officer (RSO) for instructions.

Store guns so that they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.

Be sure the gun is safe to operate.

Use only the correct ammunition for your gun.

General COSC Safety Rules & Regulations

The range property is owned by Indian Canyon Land Corporation (“ICLC”) and as such it is entitled to promulgate such rules and policies as it sees fit. ICLC reserves the right to revise or modify any of these rules or policies at any time. The term “range” includes all designated venues including but not limited to pistol, rifle, archery, trap, skeet, and picnic areas.

Failure to comply with the following rules and polices may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the range facility.

No person is permitted on the range property without a properly completed Release form having been submitted to the range master, range safety officer, or a representative of ICLC.

A competent range master or range safety officer must be on duty whenever the range is in operation. Anyone who uses the facility is responsible for their own actions and must ensure that all safety precautions are strictly enforced.

No user or guest of the facility may participate in any activity on ICLC property that is considered illegal by local, state, or federal governments. Regardless of whether said rule or regulation is included here in. Adhering to the law is your responsibility.

No shooting before 7:00 AM or after 10:00 PM is permitted.

If you are the last person to leave the facility it is your responsibility to lock the yellow gate. Please do not assume someone else will do it for you. Our security depends on it. If you don’t know how ask a range master or ICLC representative.

Do not give out the combinations or loan electronic gate cards to anyone.

Do not manually push or pull the electronic gate. If it is not working contact an ICLC representative for repair.

The speed limit on the range road is 10 miles per hour and 5 miles per hour inside the facility.

Do not obstruct or tamper with or disconnect any of the security cameras. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.

Park in designated areas, be courteous and make sure to always allow access for emergency vehicles.

All L A County Fire Dept. and US Forest Service fire regulations must be obeyed. The local fire and smoking regulations that are posted on a large sign at the beginning of Lopez Canyon Road apply at the range facility.

No open fires are allowed on the ICLC property.

BBQ’s must be used in designated cooking areas only, not on shooting range venues. Approved areas are the Sidewinder Café, the Green House patio area, the upper trap range BBQ area, and the lower range cook shack BBQ area.

Keep the range facility clean and free of debris. It is the responsibility of every range user to leave the facility in a clean and secure condition. Dispose of old targets and other waste products in the appropriate containers. Burning of refuse in any manner is specifically prohibited. Do not bring furniture or appliances from home, chances are if you don’t want it we don’t either.

The 300-yard rifle range butts are permanently closed. Do not use them!

Rest Rooms are available for users and guests, please use them as necessary and keep the facility in a clean sanitary condition.

All dogs and other pets must be kept on a leash and in the control of their owner or person who brought them. It is also that individual’s responsibility to clean up after their pet and properly dispose of the waste.

Guests are not permitted to wander about the facility without being accompanied by their host. Hosts are responsible for the actions of their guests. A guest may only shoot under the direct supervision of their host providing the host is qualified to supervise the guest. Instruction may also be provided by the range master on duty.

There is no hunting of any animals, birds, rodents, or other living beings allowed on the ICLC property.

Anyone on the facility must produce identification upon request. Persons without current affiliation membership cards may not be allowed to remain on the property.

It is the responsibility of all users of the property to comply and enforce these rules and polices.

Users and guests who arrive on other clubs assigned days when the range is in operation must ask permission of the host club’s range master before using any venue. The host club’s range master may refuse to allow such users and guests to share the assigned day and these unassigned users and guests should leave the facility.

Guest users of the range may be allowed to use the facility upon receiving permission from a host club’s range master however they must relinquish control of any range venue to make way for host club members on their assigned days if asked to do so.

Users who have assigned days and weekends have control over the facility and the activities on those days and may or may not allow other persons to participate in their activities and admittance is at the host club’s sole discretion.

Any user organization may establish rules and policies which are more restrictive than those included herein and enforce those rules on their assigned days. Other users and guests must adhere to the rules of the host organization.

Daily use rental customers and law enforcement customers shall be governed by the range rules and policies as set forth by ICLC. The ICLC rental liaison person shall administer these rules and policies. Other users and their guests may not interfere with their activities with the exception safety of violations but are required to report any perceived infractions to an ICLC representative.

All users and their guests are to intervene if they observe any unsafe act occurring, so users and guests are not injured. Safety is the primary concern.

Rifles may be used on P4 providing all proper back stop and steel target rules are observed. No magnum rifle calibers allowed on P4.

Maintenance of the facility is the user’s responsibility, clean up after yourself and your guests. Use appropriate trash containers.

Waddles on the lower range bays are there for drainage control and shooting them even by accident should be avoided. Targets should be placed in such a manner, so the waddles are not in the impact area.

Shooting Range Rules and Policies

Failure to comply with the following rules and polices may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the range facility.

Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it.

Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.

Know your target and what is beyond.

Know how to use your firearm safely.

Be sure your firearm is safe to use.

Only use the correct ammunition for your firearm.

Always wear eye and ear protection! Both when shooting and when around other shooters. Pregnant women should consider dangerous noise levels for the unborn child before entering the shooting range.

Never use drugs or alcohol when shooting. Never use over the counter or prescription drugs that may impair your abilities when shooting.

Persons under the age of 21 may shoot only under the supervision of his or her parent or guardian or qualified adult instructor.

Store your firearm unloaded and safely when not in use. While at the range keep your firearm within your immediate control or lock it inside your vehicle.

Do not rely on the firearm’s mechanical safety. “Safety is your responsibility.”

Be aware that certain types of firearms and certain shooting activities require extra precautions. If you don’t know ask!

Keep your firearm clean and in good working order. Proper care of your firearm is important for a safe shooting experience.

Wash your hands immediately after shooting, handling ammunition, or cleaning firearms.

If your firearm fails to fire when the trigger is pulled keep it pointed in a safe direction until the cause is found and remedied. For possible hang fires keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction for at least 30 seconds and for muzzleloaders at least 60 seconds.

ICLC recommends that you do not repair, alter, or modify your firearm as damage or injury may result. Only qualified persons should make repairs or modifications and you should seek the services of a competent gunsmith for assistance.

Rocks, bottles, old appliances, compressed gas cylinders, etc. are not approved targets. Consider what is safe before shooting. Rocks can cause ricochets that can start fires or can injure you or others on the range.

Steel targets for handgun and pistol caliber rifle may be used with jacketed or lead ammunition providing they are placed so there is an appropriate backstop, and a 7-yard minimum target distance is maintained.

Steel targets for rifle calibers are allowed for lead bullets only, No rifle caliber jacketed ammunition may be used on steel targets due to fire danger. The only exception where jacketed rifle caliber ammunition is allowed on steel is the 200-yard gong permanently installed in the 200-yard berm on the big bore range.

Steel pipes and permanent target holders embedded in the ground are not to be used as targets.

No steel core or steel jacketed ammunition and no type of armor piercing ammunition is allowed on the range. If you are unsure that the ammunition contains steel projectiles check them with a magnet.

No rifles chambered in 50 caliber BMG may be fired on the range.

Tracer ammunition, exploding ammunition and exploding targets including Tannerite are not to be used on the range due to fire danger. Sworn Law enforcement officer training may be exempt from this provision with express permission from ICLC.

Paper and cardboard targets are approved and can be shot with lead or jacketed bullets. Bowling pins may also be used as targets providing the placement is at a minimum of 7 yards and the impact area is within the intended back stop.

All targets must be placed so that the impact area is in the intended back stops of each range venue and not in the side hills or side berms.

Target placement should ensure that bullets do not impact on the ground short of the back stop and ricochet into the hill sides.

Loaded firearms may not be carried about the property at any time. Loaded carry is allowed only on a specific venue when part of a match requirement. The shooter may not leave that specific venue for any reason until the firearm has been unloaded. On Duty Law enforcement officers are exempt from this requirement.

Targets or target stands belonging to other range users or tenants may not be used without their specific permission.

Extreme rapid fire is discouraged as the shooter may lose control of the firearm. Such practice is subject to the discretion of the range master.

Fully automatic firearms may not be used at the range! ICLC at its discretion, may allow certain fully automatic firearms to be used under specific conditions by Law Enforcement agencies. Movie and television productions with proper permits and licenses may also qualify for exemption providing blank ammunition is to be used. ICLC must be notified in advance of any full auto use and issue written permission for the specified activity.

No shooting from moving vehicles is allowed without specific permission from ICLC and under the direct supervision of an ICLC appointed Range Safety Officer.

No shot size larger than 7 ½ may be used at the trap and skeet ranges. “Steel shot is prohibited on the trap and skeet ranges.” Shotgun slugs and – or large size shot including buck shot may be fired at other venues however such use is subject to the discretion of the range master.

Trap and skeet machines are for authorized, properly trained and qualified users only. ICLC reserves the right to limit access to these machines to only those it deems qualified. The machines are not for personal use and are for sanctioned events only.

Range Masters, Chief Range Safety Officers and Range Safety Officers may prohibit the use of any firearms, ammunition, equipment, target or shooting practice he or she deems unsafe.

Recommended Steel target distances based on AR 550 steel

Pistol Caliber Pistol

9 mm, 40 cal, 32, 38, 45 ACP

UPPSA rules, 7 meters or 22.96 feet

Steel Challenge Match rules 7 yards, 21 feet

All magnum pistol calibers 25 yards.

Most target manufactures suggest 25 yards for all calibers for safety and target life. Organized shooting sports and related practice that are allowed on the Lopez range allow for lesser distance noted above.

Pistol caliber rifle

USPSA rule. 7 meters or 22.96 feet

Steel Challenge Match rules, 7 yards, 21 feet

Most target manufactures suggest 25 yards for safety and target life. Organized shooting sports and related practice that are allowed on the Lopez range allow for lesser distance noted above.

High power rifle:

The only approved high power rifle steel target at the Lopez range is the permanently installed gong at 200 yards. Do not set your own steel targets for high power rifle anywhere on the range due to extreme fire danger. (No steel jacketed or steel core ammunition allowed at any time)

5.56 & 223, 200 yards

7.62 / 308, 3006, and all other standard rifle calibers 200 yards

300 mag and similar magnum calibers 200 yards

Rim Fire Rifle & Pistol:

7 meters, 22.96 feet for USPSA

7 yards, 21 feet for steel Challenge.

22 rim fire magnum 25 yards

Shot Gun:

410 to 12 gauges, bird shot to buck shot, 10 yards. This applies to Lead Only, NO Steel Shot allowed.

Slugs 100 yards

SASS (Cowboy) lead only:

Pistol, 7 yards

Rifle, 13 yards

Shot gun, 10 yards, maximum shot size # 4, No slugs
